Embroidery was a favourite pastime among wealthy women at the beginning of the 19th century. Frivolité – a kind of tatting with cotton thread using little shuttles – was particularly popular. The women preferred to work together in groups. When they visited each other, they would bring along their needlework in this kind of bag.
