Full Evening Coat, anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1785
The buttons on this coat are purely decorative; there are no buttonholes. In the course of the 18th century the fronts of men’s coats increasingly curved back and were fastened at the chest with only a single hook. The green silk was woven in a complex manner with green velvet ribs in the pink underground, and so changes colour as the wearer moves.
