Model of a 30-pounder gun and carriage on a ship’s deck, with all its accessories and a gun port.
The gun, made of wood and painted black, is 63.4 cm long and has a 34 mm calibre. Its button is flat from behind and has a breeching ring. The carriage, narrowing to the front, consists of two cheeks with four steps, connected by an inclined transom, a breast piece with a hinged outer part, and the axletrees. The stool bed connects the axletrees. The double wooden trucks all have the same diameter. Stool block and quoin were found separately and added to the model, as was the loading gear consisting of gunner’s ladle, two sponges (one wool, one pig’s bristle), scraper, wadhook and rammer. The deck on which the model stands is inclined, the ship’s side has diagonal trussing; the gun port has a rectangular glass light. Other accessories are three cannonballs in a rack against the ship’s wall, two rounds of canister in a similar rack, two budge barrels, a cartridge box, a powder horn, an artilleryman’s pouch, a priming iron and a linstock.
The model represents a gun emplacement on the main deck of a 72-gun ship of the line. It was ordered on 17 April 1837 from the Flushing Navy dockyard.2 On 16 April 1839 it was added to the Navy Model Room.3
