Young Woman with a Lantern, Suzuki Harunobu, 1765 - 1770

color woodcut, h 280mm × w 208mm More details

Harunobu is celebrated for being the first in Japan to use the full-colour printing technique. His prints were highly popular in his days and often depict adolescent female figures – like this girl quietly leaving a house at dusk. Like many famous Japanese printmakers specializing in prints of actors, landscape prints or pictures of beautiful women, Harunobu also worked in the shunga (erotic print) genre.
