Anton Heyboer was self-educated. He taught himself to etch, with at most a few pointers from befriended artists. In his early years he printed his etchings without taking note of rules and guidelines. He did not use traditional copper for his etching plates, but any material at hand, usually pre-used and cheap, such as zinc. When he ran short of plate material, he simply cut a piece of zinc from his gutter.
