Krishna Followed by his Herd in Vrindavan, anonymous, c. 1450 - c. 1475

bodycolour, with pen and black ink, h 103mm × w 232mm More details

The texts on either side of this folio set forth the many feelings of devotion a follower might have for Krishna. Krishna is simultaneously a youthful cowherd and an avatar of Vishnu, the supreme deity. The flute in his hand stands for the playfulness associated with this persona. Meanwhile, he keeps his followers from straying, as expressed by the cows trailing behind him.
