Portrait of Lucas de Clercq, Frans Hals, c. 1635

oil on canvas, h 121.6cm × w 91.5cm Catalogue entry

Lucas de Clercq was a Haarlem merchant of raw materials for linen and other textiles. He married Feyntje van Steenkiste, the daughter of his supplier. There is a misconception that De Clercq is portrayed with a broken right arm supported in a sling. In truth, in that era many individuals were portrayed with their arm wrapped in a black cloth, a common accessory at the time.
