Pair of Earrings and Two Hair Ornaments, anonymous, c. 1750

gold, pearls, precious stones, h 4.5cm More details

These jewels are part of an ensemble collected by Julius Stein van Gollenesse, director-general of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) in Batavia (now Jakarta). Attached to the top of the ornament in the shape of a horizontal crescent moon is a tiny eye. A pearl necklace would have been affixed to it, and the jewel then pinned in the hair so that it would fall in the middle of the forehead. The round ornament was worn on the side of the head.
