Water Vessel, anonymous, 1200 - 1499

bronze (metal), h 26.8cm × w 12cm × d 7.5cm More details

Water has traditionally played an important role in Hindu and Buddhist rituals in Indonesia, and this is still clearly manifest throughout Bali. Water has a purifying effect and symbolizes amrita, the elixir of life. This jug with a serpent spout and high neck is quite special, because its form resembles the amrita containers that are depicted in relief on South- and Southeast Asian temples.
