ivory, h c.8.9cm × w c.7.3cm × t c.1.7cm More details

This relief is one of the oldest ivories in the Rijksmuseum’s collection. It was once part of a large, gilded reliquary in the shape of a cruciform temple with cupolas. Ivory reliefs such as this one were mounted on all sides. This one was excavated in Nijmegen and is darker in colour, having been buried underground for so long.
