In the early 1960s various international artists derived inspiration from the natural appearance of their materials. In the case of gold, rough, almost molten forms dominated. For the stones, primitive cuts were preferred. Citroen was a leading Dutch representative of the naturalistic movement in jewellery. He assembled this brooch from gold rivulets, the branches of which he marked with precious stones.
