Artillery units always took a blacksmith on campaign for on-the-spot repairs to carriages. Cavalry units were often also accompanied by a blacksmith’s wagon for shoeing the horses. The blacksmith kept his tools and a store of raw materials in the chest. He used the bellows to fan the fire.
