Polychromed wooden half bracket model of the starboard side of a three-masted ship, mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard with a stand.
The side of the ship is depicted by ribbands attached to frame moulds. Above the wale the side is planked and painted black. Fourteen shadowed gun ports are situated on one continuous gun deck, plus two more at the stern. The gun deck is highlighted by a broad, horizontal yellow band. At the forecastle and stern a raised, black bulwark with square hances is indicated. The sheer is almost flat. One wale is indicated. The bow features an empty beakhead and a black knighthead. The elliptical stern has a single-storey gallery, decorated with carvings and painted white. Below the stern a straight, square-headed rudder is indicated. The hull is S-bottomed and painted white below the waterline. The position of three masts and the bowsprit is shown in a truncated form.
This model of an American sloop of war is probably based on information gathered by Julius Constantijn Rijk (1787-1854) and August Elize Tromp (1801-1871) during their assignment to North America in 1825.1
Scale unknown.
