Sabre (nimcha) of Cornelis Tromp, anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700

Sabre (nimcha) of Cornelis Tromp, anonymous, c. 1600 - c. 1700

engraving, l 88cm More details

It is not known if Tromp was presented with this sabre – nimcha in Algerian – or if he seized the weapon as booty during a confrontation with the corsairs of Algiers. The form of the hilt resembles a bird’s head. Like Michiel de Ruyter’s nimcha, the blade of this sabre is inscribed with a text, possibly a proverb from the Koran.
