Until a suitcase full of photographs surfaced at a London jumble sale in 1981 the Englishman Charles Jones was an unknown entity in the history of photography. A gardener by occupation, he took photographs of the vegetables, fruit, and flowers he grew himself in a direct, unadorned manner that was singularly modern around 1900.
