On 12 March 1945, 30 Dutch prisoners were executed by a German firing squad near the Weteringplantsoen in Amsterdam. Photographer Cas Oorthuys recorded unknown people hastily laying the Dutch flag on the site to honour the murdered resistance fighters. Taken in secret, this photograph makes it clear that this is a quick, covert action that had to escape the notice of the German occupiers.
