The dealer who dismantled the Zobel Album in 1999 cut various sheets with multiple prints in two to sell them separately. In this case, the Rijksmuseum was able to acquire both the top and bottom half of the sheet, which a paper restorer was skilfully able to reattach. The cutting line can still be vaguely discerned.

Description

Blad met vier prenten. Linksboven: portret van Francesco Sforza en profil naar rechts in maniëristische sierlijst. Rechtsboven: man op een rots, voor een boom, speelt op een draailier. Linksboven: twee mannenkoppen. De voorste man steekt tong uit naar de achterste. Rechtsonder: twee lelijke oude vrouwen kijken elkaar aan. De rechter houdt een salami voor zich uit.

Explanatory note

Folio 88 uit het prentalbum van Johann Georg I. Zobel von Giebelstadt (Röttingen 1543-07-20 - Bamberg 1580-09-07), de latere bisschop van Bamberg. Het album is vermoedelijk samengesteld tussen 1568 en 1570 in Venetië. Het album werd in 1999 uit elkaar genomen door een antiquair. De in totaal 124 folio's met prenten uit het "Zobel Album" werden aangekocht door verschillende musea en privéverzamelingen. De grootste groep (68 folio's) bevindt zich in de collectie van het Rijksmuseum. Het folio was in tweeën gesneden voor de verkoop. De helften zijn via verschillende handelaren bij het Rijksmuseum binnen gekomen. De helften zijn weer aan elkaar geplakt. Linksboven: naar portretmedaillon ontworpen door Antonio Pisanello. Onderste helft: Deze prenten worden toegeschreven aan Giacomo Franco, de zoon van Giovanni Battista Franco. De datering van het Zobel Album en de stilistische parallellen met de andere prenten op het blad, welke aan Giovanni Battista worden toegeschreven, maakt een toeschrijving van de prenten op de onderste helft aan Giovanni Battista aannemelijker. De prenten zijn vermoedelijk naar een ontwerp door Leonardo da Vinci.
