The Battle of Livorno, Reinier Nooms, 1653 - 1664

oil on canvas, h 142cm × w 225cm More details

A painted sheet of paper at the lower left describes the subject: the battle between the Dutch and English fleets off the Italian port of Livorno (Leghorn). Victory brought the Dutch control over trade in the Mediterranean. Nooms almost certainly painted the canvas for the Chamber of Levantine Trade in Amsterdam.
