William of Orange, Adriaen Thomasz. Key, c. 1579
In 1579 the 46-year-old William of Orange is at the height of his power. Everything seems to be going well. Hailed as a hero in Flanders and Brabant two years earlier, now he is truly the generally accepted leader of the revolt against Philip II. He resides in Antwerp, where this portrait of him is painted. In it, William is presented as a statesman rather than a warrior: self-confident, but without airs.
