Voor een zuil staat een vaandeldrager, ten halve lijve en profil weergegeven. Hij houdt zijn elleboog in zijn zijde, die daardoor naar de toeschouwer uitsteekt. Zijn hoofd is frontaal geschilderd en hij kijkt de toeschouwer indringend aan. Hij draagt zestiende-eeuwse kledij met slitten in de mouwen en een schaambuidel. Zijn slappe hoed heeft inkepingen in de rand. Niet alleen het vaandel, dat hij met zijn linkerhand vasthoudt, maar ook zijn metalen halsberg en degen duiden erop dat hier een militair is afgebeeld. Het felle licht dat van linksboven komt, valt op het vaandel en op de rechterarm en het manchet van de man.
