‘Long have I yearned for the man who would open his heart.’ With these words, inscribed in Middle Dutch on the Sshaped banderole, Lysbeth of Duvenvoorde expressed her feelings for her husband. She hailed from a noble Dutch family and in 1430 married the knight Simon van Adrichem, a bailiff and dike-reeve of the Rhineland waterboard around Leiden. This portrait was painted that same year.

coat of arms, upper left: divided vertically, 1, a red lion with blue tongue and claws on a gold field, a blue label across its breast, and on the breast, over all, a silver shield charged with a black cogwheel; 2, three black crescent moons on a gold field
inscription, on the scroll: ‘Mi verdriet lange te hopen, Wie is hi die sijn hert hout open.’ (It saddens me to yearn so long. Who is it that will open up his heart.)
inscription, on the reverse of the parchment: ‘Afbeeltsel van Juffer Lijsbeth van Duvoorde, Heer Dircks dochter. Sij troude den 19 Meert ao 1430 aen Symon van Adrichem, Ridder Heer Floris soon, en sterff op Ons heeren hemelvaerts Avond ao: 1472, en is begraven in de Beverwijck in t Reguliersconvent voor het H. Cruys Autaer dat hy (Simon) had doen machen(?)’ (The likeness of Lady Lysbeth van Duvenvoirde, daughter of Lord Dirck. On 19 March 1430 she married Simon van Adrichem, knight, son of Lord Floris, and died on the evening of the Ascension of Our Lord 1472 and is buried in Beverwijk, in the Convent of the Regulars, before the Altar of the Holy Cross that he had ordered to be erected there.)

Description

Portret van Lysbeth van Duvenvoorde (gest. 1472). Staande, tot de enkels, naar rechts. In de linkerhand een banderol met inscriptie. Linksboven het familiewapen. Onderdeel van een tweeluik, de verblijfplaats van de rechtervleugel met het portret van haar echtgenoot (in 1430) Symon van Adrichem is onbekend.
